Employee Assistance Program

As defined by the International Employee Assistance Professionals Association (EAPA), an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a worksite-based program designed to assist organizations in addressing productivity issues and helping employees identify and resolve personal concerns, including, but not limited to: health, marital, family, financial, alcohol, drug, legal, emotional, stress, or other personal issues that may affect job performance. Considerable savings of benefit dollars are realized through solution-focused treatment, reduced length of stay, and containment of provider cost.

Mental health and substance abuse costs currently reflect between 15-24% of the total health care cost. Drug and alcohol abuse in the business community is estimated to cost $16.6 billion a year. Stress related mental health claims account for 15% of all workers’ compensation claims and ADA lawsuits related to mental health issues are increasing. Violence in the workplace is on the rise consisting of employee fights, weapons at work and property damage. And lastly, sexual harassment lawsuits have cost employers millions of dollars. With an EAP, many employers have realized returns on their investments.
